Imp

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The Imp is a small magical creature found only in Britain and Ireland, where it turns a familiar comic impulse into practical mischief. Similar in height to the Pixie but unable to fly and usually dark brown to black, it is most often encountered in damp, marshy country near riverbanks, pushing and tripping passersby for amusement.

Appearance and Identification

An Imp stands between six and eight inches tall, a size it shares with the Pixie. The resemblance is limited: unlike the Pixie, the Imp cannot fly, and its usual dark-brown-to-black colouring is far less vivid. Height alone may invite confusion, but flight and colour distinguish the two.

Habitat and Behaviour

The Imp is found only in Britain and Ireland. It prefers damp, marshy terrain and is often seen near riverbanks, where it amuses itself by pushing and tripping people. Its slapstick sense of humour is therefore more than a general disposition: it is expressed through physical pranks in its preferred surroundings.

Classification and Significance

The Ministry of Magic classifies the Imp as XX. The creature’s entry places that rating alongside an account of its limited range, habitat, appearance, and behaviour, presenting it as a recognizable but comparatively minor source of trouble. Its resemblance to the Pixie offers a compact example of how creatures that look alike can be separated by concrete differences in ability and colouring.
